Recap: There’s A Wedding In ‘The Atypical Family’ Episode 6

The post Recap: There’s A Wedding In ‘The Atypical Family’ Episode 6 appeared first on Ready Steady Cut.

There are several levels on which The Atypical Family doesn’t work. It’s an oddly structured and paced show that sometimes seems to be making things up as it goes along. With Episode 6, it’s developing so quickly that the characters don’t seem to be able to keep up with everything that happened in Episode 5 and before.

At least the core plot thread remains consistent – the primary source of drama right now remains whether Da-hae will marry Gwi-joo, despite recent revelations about her dodgy ex-con mother and the fact that she herself has become slightly terrified by the superpowered potential of the Bok clan.

Who said romance is dead?

Gwi-joo Tries To Impress Da-Hae

Anyway, picking up from where we left off at Yi-na’s school, Gwi-joo rescues Da-hae from the storage room, promises he’ll go back and save her from the fire, and then visits Yi-na’s teacher. Remember, he thinks Yi-na is being bullied at this point.

Gwi-joo’s interference doesn’t go down well with Yi-na, though, who thinks it’s ruining her friendship with Hye-rim by getting the latter in trouble. When Gwi-joo tries to talk to her about it all Yi-na says she’d rather talk to Da-hae, which gives him an idea. He’ll simply fall in love with Da-hae and marry her for the sake of Yi-na’s happiness. Fair enough!

This plan is complicated by the fact that Da-hae has decided to leave the Bok family alone, despite her quite obviously genuine feelings for Gwi-joo. Her fake family are planning a strategic and rapid exit, so say hello to the closest thing we have to a ticking-clock device.

Eventually, Da-hae agrees to talk to Yi-na and points out the obvious – that Gwi-joo was at the school because he’s worried about her. Despite all the deception going on around them, the relationship between Gwi-joo, Da-jae, and Yi-na is very genuine and is the key element of human drama that viewers have to latch onto at this point.

Mrs. Bok Has A Dream

With this being the core drama, it also brings the core conflict. It’s imperative to Da-hae’s family that the marriage occurs despite the risks, but the marriage might be more trouble than it’s worth if Man-huem’s latest dream is anything to go by.

This dream occurs at the sauna, where she goes to speak with Da-hae’s family and sleepily agrees to officiate the wedding. Since Da-hae is integral to the rejuvenation of Gwi-joo’s time travel powers, and since Man-huem sees it taking place in her prognostications, it obviously has to go ahead.

Dong-hee Can Fly Again

Speaking of powers rejuvenating, Dong-hee also gets some wind in her sails in The Atypical Family Episode 6.

Dong-hee’s determined to expose Da-hae, but this intersects with her personal journey of losing weight and regaining her flying ability. We get the most significant development in this regard here, when Dong-hee rushes home to toss Da-hae’s room, and Grace hot on her heels to fight her for the family ring she finds in Da-hae’s suitcase.

During the fight, Dong-hee ends up crashing from the first floor… but levitating in the air. Score.

The Atypical Family Episode 6 Ends With Gwi-joo And Da-hae’s Wedding

The episode ends with the wedding between Gwi-joo and Da-hae. Everyone seems excited for it, but there’s an ominous feeling around the place since Man-huem is clearly hiding something about what will unfold.

It turns out to be Da-hae leaving Gwi-joo at the altar. However, this is a more caring gesture than it sounds. After being reminded of Gwi-joo’s previous heartbreaks, Da-hae doesn’t want to give him another by marrying him under false pretenses.

Despite this having been foreseen and coming to pass, I still don’t think we’ve seen the end of this relationship yet.
